WHAT IS THE STOREFRONT ENHANCEMENT GRANT PROGRAM? North End Revitalization Incorporated (NERI), in partnership with Neighbourhoods Alive! (NA!), in cooperation with the North End BIZ, Selkirk Avenue BIZ, and the Between the Parks Business Association have established the Storefront Enhancement Grant (SEG) Program for local small businesses and non-profit agencies/organizations in the North End. The SEG Program promotes local community investment by providing cost-shared non-repayable funding grants to eligible North End small businesses and non-profit agencies and organizations for exterior renovations to the frontage of their property (visible to passing traffic) that enhances the appearance, safety, and value of their property. The program is administered by the North End Business Development Centre. HOW MUCH ARE THE GRANTS? SEG Program grants are provided on a cost-sharing basis up to a maximum of $3,000.00. Fund availability may limit the amount of funds approved for individual projects. Vacant commercial properties are limited to $1,000.00 maximum. WHO CAN APPLY? All local North End small businesses and non-profit agencies and organizations located within the NERI/NECRC catchment neighbourhoods are eligible to apply for a grant. For specific boundaries, please see the attached Map of NECRC North End Boundaries or contact NECRC/NEBDC for clarification. Businesses or non-profits that reside outside these communities are not eligible to apply. Property owners of vacant and/or derelict commercial buildings are eligible to apply for a smaller grant to a maximum of $1,000.00. Please note that preference for grant selection will be given to first-time applicants, clustering opportunities and projects utilizing North End suppliers. PATH Employability Centre is proud to present its newest program: Gateway to Literacy located at 563 Selkirk Avenue. In concert with the pre-existing programs offered at PATH, the Gateway to Literacy Program is delivered based on individual learning plans, where participants will engage in activities designed to increase performance in the nine essential skills areas of • Reading • Document Use • Numeracy • Writing • Oral Communication • Working With Others • Thinking • Computer Use • Continuous Learning The nine essential skills provide the foundation for learning all other skills and enable people to evolve with their jobs and adapt to workplace change. Gateway to Literacy consists of two streams: Gateway to Essential Skills (a broad-based stream) and the Gateway to Pre-Employment (an integrated stream). Gateway to Essential Skills is for participants who are seeking to become more independent and self-regulated learners. After completing Gateway to Literacy, participants in the broad-based stream will • be confident in their roles as learners • believe that they can learn • be competent in exploring, meeting and recognizing their individualized mode of learning • believe that they are responsible for their own learning and behaviour • be motivated to continuously grow and be ready to learn Gateway to Pre-Employment is for participants who are current or potential future candidates for the demand led stream and been identified as individuals who would benefit from basic essential skills training through the assessment process. The North End Community Renewal Corporation (NECRC), in partnership with Aboriginal Music Week, North End non-profit organizations and our many sponsors, is pleased to announce the 17th annual Picnic in the Park. The Picnic in the Park is a free community event that started in 1999. Picnic celebrates the cultural diversity of the North End and aims to present a positive image of the community. The event now has over 4,000 community members attending and that number continues to grow. The event includes free food, children’s activities, cultural entertainment, prizes, artist and craft sales and organization information booths. The Picnic will take place rain or shine: Saturday, August 22, 2015 – St. John’s Park, Winnipeg MB – 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM “Picnic is in its seventeenth year and going strong,” says Robert Neufeld, Executive Director at NECRC, “we celebrate the culture and diversity of the North End by providing different foods, activities and entertainment to represent as many cultures as we can.” Neufeld says, “It’s great to have so many partners working together and this year we are especially pleased to partner with Aboriginal Music Week.” Our community partners include: Aboriginal Visioning for the North End, the City of Winnipeg, Mount Carmel Clinic, North End Women’s Centre, FACT, and St. John’s Residents Association.
