Provincial CHII Grants Update
We have received formal notice that the Province of Manitoba has made the difficult decision discontinue the Community Housing Improvement Initiative (CHII) funding that provided for small exterior homeowner fix-up grants within the communities of William Whyte, North Point Douglas, Dufferin, St. John’s and Lord Selkirk Park.
We are saddened to lose these grants in our North End communities as they have enabled community-wide improvements and leveraged significant investment in Winnipeg’s core-area communities. We are grateful to the Province of Manitoba for the eleven years (2006-2016) of CHII investment they have supported in the North End in partnership with the community. It has made a difference in our communities and many residents we encounter feel the area has improved noticeably in that time.
The Province will continue to provide assistance to lower-income homeowners. If you, or someone you know, is struggling with a critical repair issue or need assistance bringing your home up to current safety standards, please check Manitoba Housing’s Repair Programs web page for the full list of repair programs for resident homeowners and landlords.
If you are a North End homeowner and feel you need assistance applying, contact our Housing Resource Coordinator, Tracey Proctor, by email at HousingGrants@necrc.org, or by phone at 204-927-2341 and we may be able to provide assistance ranging from providing recommendations, helping to fill out applications or even direct advocacy.
NECRC would also like to thank the City of Winnipeg for providing the funding to allow for the continuation of Exterior Fix-up grants within the City designated North End Housing Improvement Zone (HIZ) communities of William Whyte and North Point Douglas.
Application deadline is Friday, May 19th at 4pm.
